Eulogies of Wu, the 2nd Floor

Chengni stone carving of Suzhou originated from inkstone carving. Other artistic expressions including stone kettles, traditional Chinese stationery, and imitation plant carvings appear in modern times. The development of Chengni stone carving is closely related to traditional Chinese literary culture. It continues to integrate with the characters and aesthetics of the literati, and serves practical, decorative, and playing functions. Its development reflects the social customs and aesthetic sensibilities of various periods in the Wu region. The traditional craft of inkstone carving plays an important role in the history of Chinese arts and crafts. In 2007, Chengni stone carving of Suzhou was listed on the Jiangsu provincial intangible cultural heritage catalogue.

As the third exhibition of Craftsmanship serial exhibitions of the Museum of Wu, Splendid Stone Carving—Exhibition of Exquisite Chengni Stone Carvings of Suzhou, based on the practical and theoretical exploration of Cai Jinxing and Cai Chunsheng in the field of Chengni stone carving, aims to show the visitors the past and present of Chengni stone carving and contribute to its future conservation, inheritance, and promotion.
